NBA Undrafted Players Who Became Stars

NBA undrafted players who became stars include Fred VanVleet, Christian Wood, Duncan Robinson, Joe Ingles, Chris Boucher, and Wesley Matthews.

The NBA Draft is an eagerly awaited event where teams choose the top young talent in basketball. Some players who are not selected in the draft still succeed in the league.

However, to establish themselves and secure a position on a team, the players must put out more effort. Several undrafted players have achieved success throughout the NBA's long history becoming well-known figures. 

Fred VanVleet, a guard who joined Toronto Raptors after being undrafted, is one of the outstanding nba undrafted all stars who made his impact on NBA history.

Despite the initial rejection, VanVleet's tough playmaking abilities and performances pushed him to become a vital part participant during the Raptors' historic championship run in 2019. 

Fred VanVleet - Toronto Raptors

The best undrafted NBA players of all time is Toronto Raptors' Point Guard and Shooting Guard Fred VanVleet. He signed with Toronto Raptors after initially being unpicked in the draft.

During the 2016–17 season, VanVleet played for both the Raptors and their G League club, Raptors 905. In 2019, he helped the Raptors win an NBA championship after becoming a vital part of the team.

When VanVleet scored 54 points against Orlando Magic in 2021, he set a record for both the Raptors and all NBA undrafted players. In 2022, he was selected for his first NBA All-Star Game.

In a 128-108 victory over the Charlotte Hornets on April 2, 2023, VanVleet scored 20 assists, a career-high, and a Raptors record, along with 20 points, five rebounds, and three steals. He now holds the franchise record for points and assists in a single game.

Christian Wood - Dallas Mavericks

Christian Wood was one of the best-undrafted players in 2015. Christian is a professional basketball player for the Dallas Mavericks of the NBA. 

Wood failed to get a selection in the 2015 NBA draft and then signed on with the Houston Rockets for the NBA Summer League.

He spent a lot of time working with the NBA Development League's Delaware 87ers during his rookie season. Wood, who played for the Rockets, had a breakthrough year in 2020–2021, averaging 21.0 points, 9.6 rebounds, and 1.2 blocks per game.

Christian was dealt to the Dallas Mavericks on June 24, 2022, along with Boban Marjanovi, Trey Burke, Marquese Chriss, and Sterling Brown, and the draft rights to Wendell Moore Jr.

He became the only player in the team's history to record at least 25 points in each of his opening two games. On December 25, 2022, Wood helped the Mavericks to defeat the Lakers 124-115 where he finished with 30 points, 8 rebounds, 7 assists, 4 steals, and 2 blocks.

Duncan Robinson - Miami Heat

Duncan Robinson is one of the best undrafted NBA players 2018 season. Duncan signed a contract for the NBA Summer League with the Miami Heat after going undrafted in the 2018 draft.

During his time with the Heat, Robinson set a number of 3-point shot records. He was a member of the Heat teams in the NBA in 2020 and 2023 that advanced to the NBA Finals.

In his 125th game, Robinson made his 400th three-point attempt, beating Trae Young and Luka Doncic. In the 2021–22 NBA season, Robinson owned multiple Heat franchise shooting records.

Robinson broke Tim Hardaway's 806-point career total for Miami on December 30 against the Denver Nuggets to set a new team-high record. 

Joe Ingles - Milwaukee Bucks

Joe Ingles is one of the best undrafted NBA players 2009 season. Joe then signed a contract with the LA Clippers in order to participate in the NBA Summer League.

Before joining the Utah Jazz in 2014, Ingles played for a number of foreign teams, including FC Barcelona and Maccabi Tel Aviv. Ingles joined the Jazz in October 2014 and has been an important member of the club. 

With the Utah Jazz, Ingles broke a number of franchise records, becoming the team's all-time leader in three-pointers made.

On December 19, 2022, Joe made his Milwaukee Bucks debut in a 128-119 victory over the New Orleans Pelicans. Ingles had a double-double scoring 14 points and passing out 10 assists as his team defeated the Minnesota Timberwolves 123-114.

In addition to being a member of the Australian team that won bronze at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, he also made Australia's first basket.

Chris Boucher - Toronto Raptors

Chris Boucher is the best undrafted NBA player in 2017. Golden State Warriors signed him to a two-way contract even though he ultimately went undrafted.

The Santa Cruz Warriors promoted him to the NBA G League, where he made his NBA debut against the Reno Bighorns. He joined the Toronto Raptors on a two-way deal in July 2018 and played most of the 2018–2019 season for them. 

Boucher, who averaged 6.6 points and 4.5 rebounds per game for the Raptors in the 2019-20 season, established himself as a key member of the team.

Chris had a breakthrough season in the 2020–2021 season, scoring 13.6 points and 6.7 rebounds per game and winning the NBA's Most Improved Player award.

Jeremy Lin - Kaohsiung 17LIVE Steelers

Jeremy Lin was another undrafted impactful player. Jeremy currently plays for the Kaohsiung 17LIVE Steelers of the P. League+.

Lin joined his hometown Golden State Warriors in 2010, after being undrafted out of college. He was assigned to the NBA Development League (D-League) but didn't play much during his first season.

Before joining the New York Knicks at the start of the 2011–12 season, Lin was waived by the Warriors and the Houston Rockets in 2011.

Jeremy played for the Hornets, Brooklyn Nets, Atlanta Hawks, Toronto Raptors, Houston Rockets, and LA Lakers after his time with the Knicks.  

He left the NBA in August 2019 and joined the Beijing Ducks, where he achieved the rank of All-Star in the Chinese Basketball Association (CBA).

Lin achieved a 50-point triple-double on April 25, 2023, making him the first player in Taiwan's Professional League history. His final stat line was 50 points, 11 assists, and 10 rebounds.

Wesley Matthews - Milwaukee Bucks

Wesley Matthews is one of the top undrafted NBA players ever. Matthews applied for the 2009 draft following his college career at Marquette.

After being undrafted in 2009, Wesley signed a contract with the Utah Jazz to play in the NBA Summer League. He played for the Jazz for two seasons after making his NBA debut for the team in October 2009.

In 2019, Matthews became the sixth player in Mavericks history to make 600 3-pointers and the first undrafted player in NBA history to make 1,500 3-pointers.

In a 117-113 victory over the Boston Celtics in 2021, Wesley contributed 9 points, but his 3-pointer with 30 seconds remaining gave the Bucks the lead and helped them complete a 19-point comeback.

Earl Boykins - Houston Rockets

Earl Boykins is one of the best undrafted NBA players 1999 season. Earl is an assistant coach for the University of Texas at El Paso (UTEP) Miners. 

Boykins participated in high school basketball at Cleveland Central Catholic High School, where he scored 24.6 points per game and helped the team to a 23-2 record as a senior.

Boykins was not selected in the NBA Draft, but he was signed to five short-term contracts by NBA teams until agreeing to a five-year deal with the Denver Nuggets before the 2003–2004 season.

He had unrestricted free agency after the NBA's 2007–2008 season. In November 2009, Boykins signed a contract with the Washington Wizards, making his NBA comeback. 

On March 26, 2012, Boykins agreed to a 10-day deal with the Houston Rockets. He left the league in 2012 and has since embarked on a coaching journey.

Kent Bazemore - Los Angeles Lakers

Kent Bazemore joined the Golden State Warriors for the Las Vegas Summer League and the Oklahoma City Thunder for the Orlando Summer League after going undrafted in the 2012 NBA Draft.

The 6 feet 4 inches tall Bazemore was frequently reassigned to the NBA Development League's Santa Cruz Warriors during his rookie season.

While playing basketball at Old Dominion University, Bazemore twice won the Colonial Athletic Association's Defensive Player of the Year award.

He has played for a number of teams, including the Atlanta Hawks, Portland Trail Blazers, Sacramento Kings, and Golden State Warriors.

Bazemore signed a contract with the Lakers on August 6, 2021. He had a season-high 13 points on January 28, 2022, against Charlotte Hornets. 

Aron Baynes - Brisbane Bullets

Aron Baynes is another notable undrafted NBA player. Baynes currently plays for the Brisbane Bullets of the National Basketball League.

Before beginning his professional career in Europe, he played college basketball for Washington State University. Aron joined San Antonio Spurs in 2013, and a year later, won the NBA title.

Baynes was dealt to the Phoenix Suns on July 6, 2019, along with the draft rights to Ty Jerome, for a 2020 protected first-round pick.

During the NBA Summer League of 2022, Baynes had workouts with a number of NBA teams before signing a two-year contract with the Brisbane Bullets of the National Basketball League (NBL).
