Rabbi David Ellenson Obituary, Death Cause – My heart is broken and I am in complete and absolute astonishment after hearing the news about Rabbi David Ellenson’s demise. The influence that he had on myself, let alone on the Jewish community, is so profound that it is practically hard for me to even begin to explain it. Indeed, he was the most mentschiest of mentschiest, in addition to being a scholar and a leader who possessed a profoundly intellectual nature. This is the most important aspect of his character.
One time, I recall asking him for help with something, and he responded by saying, “Of course, I would do anything for one of my children.” This occurred either when I was attending rabbinical school or not too long after that. I remember that he said this in response to my request. I brought up the fact that I was not technically his student, despite the fact that I was attending JTS rather than HUC at the time.
The Wexner institutes, which were educational institutions where he frequently taught, were the sole means by which I was able to become one of his students. Always giving to others, he was a generous person. Throughout the years, we have had a number of conversations that have covered a wide range of subjects. These topics have included, but are not limited to Israel.
Jewish leadership, the Jewish community, the rabbinate, our shared passion for R’Chaim David HaLevy, and a great deal of other themes. For obvious reasons, this is always done while drinking a diet coke. Although it is difficult to imagine of the Jewish world without David, the influence that he had on succeeding generations of rabbis and members of the Jewish community will continue to be felt for an extremely extended period of time. David’s legacy will continue to be felt for a very long time.
